Configuring Thunderbird Mail and Filters

To set up a new email in Thunderbird, please follow these steps:

If you require additional assistance, please email Clint or Kelly, or call us at 908-859-2000.

1. Start Thunderbird

2. Click on 'Tools', then click on 'Account Settings'. A new window will pop up.

3. Click on 'Edit' in the new window, and click on 'Mail and Newsgroup Account Settings'.

4. Click on 'Outgoing Server (SMTP)' in the list.

5. Enter 'www.yourwebsitehere.com' (for example, www.dchelms.com) in the 'Outgoing Server' field, and make sure the 'Port' field has '25' in it. *note - if your ISP is CompuServe, you will need to use their outgoing mail server. Also, if your ISP is AOL, you will not be able to set up your POP email account on your computer.

6. Click on 'Add Account' towards the bottom of that window on the left hand side. An 'Account Wizard' window will pop up that says 'New Account Setup.'

7. Select 'Email Account', as the type of account you would like to create, then click on 'Next'.

8. Fill out the 'Your Name' field with your name (this is what people will see as your name when you email them), and put in your new email address in the appropriate field. Click 'Next' when you have filled in the fields.

9. Select 'POP' as the type of incoming email server you are using. In the 'Incoming Server' field, put in 'www.yourwebsitehere.com'. (for example, www.dchelms.com) Click 'Next'.

10. In the field 'Incoming User Name' and 'Outgoing User Name', put in your username for your new email address. Your username is everything before the '@yourwebsitehere.com'(example: just 'username', not username@yourwebsitehere.com). Click 'Next'

11. In the field 'Account Name', enter the name you wish. The default name is fine.

12. You should now be at a 'Congratulations' Screen. Verify all of the information, and click 'Finish'.

13. To activate the Junk Mail filter included in Thunderbird, select Tools. Select Junk Mail Controls, and then click on the 'Adaptive Filters' tab and select 'Enable adaptive junk mail detection' You are now ready to start using email with Thunderbird.

Then hit Get Mail to receive your mail.
If you require additional assistance, please email Clint or Kelly, or call us at 908-859-2000.
